1987 GALLAN forms in Boston! Initial activities include potlucks with speakers and labor solidarity for local actions. 1989 Allies for the 90s: United for Health. GALLAN comes out! GALLAN’s premier organizing event to benefit the Fenway Community Health Center and United Farm Workers brought together over 600 people with keynote by Cesar Chavez. 1989 Gay Pride. Every year march in Boston Gay Pride (and later on Dyke March). 1990 Campaign to Prevent the Repeal of the Gay & Lesbian Civil Rights Bill. GALLAN participated on statewide steering committee to plan and coordinate campaign. 1990 No on Question 3. GALLAN played key role in organizing g/l community to oppose tax rollback ballot initiative. 1991 WILD (Women’s Institute for Leadership Development). Every year GALLAN members participate by teaching leadership development and serving on the WILD board. 1992 Forum on AIDS/HIV in the Health care Workplace. GALLAN organizes event to discuss impact of AIDS on health care workers. GALLAN gets involved in Boston City Council races (developing questionnaire and endorsing/campaigning for candidates). Support Teamsters L. 122 boycott of Miller Beer by working to get Miller beer out of gay bars. 1993 National G/L March on Washington. GALLAN joins labor contingent and is very involved in organizing one day meeting to found national lgbt labor organization (eventually called Pride At Work). 1994 Organize Gays and Lesbians Against Weld (GLAW) to challenge the portrayal of Gov. Weld as a ‘homo hero’ and reveal the impact of his cuts and privatization on glbt working people. Stonewall 25th Anniversary March in NYC. GALLAN marches in NY and plays key role in founding convention of Pride At Work: National LGBT organization. 1996 Participate in labor’s coordinated campaign for MA Governor. 1998 GALLAN organizes 10th Anniversary event. Over 500 labor and glbt activists gather for screening of Out At Work and gala event. 1999 GALLAN becomes official Constituency Group of Mass AFL-CIO. Organize to pass resolution supporting Domestic Partner benefits (legislation and negotiations) at Mass AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention. 2000 Organize GLBT community to fight Questions 4 & 6 – statewide tax rollback ballot initiatives. Support IBEW 1505 Raytheon strike and their fight for Domestic Partner benefits in their contract. 2001-2002 Successfully organize labor to oppose DOMA/SuperDOMA constitutional amendment at State House. Participate in coordinated campaign w/ other GLBT organizations to defeat SuperDOMA. 2002 GALLAN gains a VP seat on Massachusetts AFL-CIO Executive Board. Participate in labors coordinated campaign for Governor. Resolution Against War in Iraq is passed with GALLAN involved in organizing against the war. Adopt Fenway Star Market as part of UFCW organizing campaign. 2003 Filed state legislation to allow gay and lesbian employees to chose their domestic partners to be the recipient of their public sector pension plans Join and participate in anti-war work with Labor for Justice and Peace. Marches in Dyke March and Pride, joined by Felix Arroy, Jarrett Barrios, and Byron Rushing at the Pride march. Sends 18 LGBT Labor Activists to the National Pride At Work Convention in DC, joined by over 300 other activists during a Hurricane. Endorses and actively works to elect pro-LGBT and pro labor candidates Felix Arroyo, Chuck Turner, Bob Bowers, and Dorothy Kelly Gay. Arroyo and Turner win! Marches with over 5,000 union workers on International Human Rights Day to demand protection for the right of workers to form union Works with UNITE! to demand that H&M Stores allow their employees to join unions, and pay fair wages in Thailand. 2004 Support Grand Opening! Organizing campaign by UNITE-HERE. 2004 & 2005 Work with Mass Equality to support same-sex marriage campaign and engage labor to oppose the Concon amendment.
